Civic grief infrastructure

A public place to mourn together.

A secular, community-held civic ritual for adults carrying significant loss—without diagnosis, forced disclosure, advice, or pressure to perform grief.

The first Syracuse pilot is being built now. No date or venue has been announced.

01 · Why this exists

Grief has places to be treated. It also needs somewhere to be witnessed.

Grief is often left either to private life or professional care. Personal, religious, and clinical support can all matter. But they do not replace a shared civic place where loss can be acknowledged without becoming a diagnosis, performance, or problem to solve.

Grief Night is being built to fill that different role: public, human, structured, and non-clinical.

02 · What happens

Structure without pressure.

Two event-holders open the gathering, state the agreements, and guide four movements. You choose your own level of participation throughout.

  1. 01

    Arrival

Cross deliberately from ordinary time into a shared ritual space.

  2. 02

    Naming

Acknowledge a person, place, future, identity, or life that was lost.

  3. 03

    Witnessing

Let grief exist without correction, comparison, diagnosis, or advice.

  4. 04

    Release

Close the gathering with one concrete act and return to ordinary life.

You may

  • Speak
  • Write
  • Remember
  • Remain silent

03 · Clear boundaries

No hidden agenda.

The container is public and transparent. Nobody has to perform grief, explain it, or accept someone else's interpretation of it.

Grief Night is

  • Intentionally structured, with room for silence and expression
  • Secular and open to people of any or no faith
  • Consent-based and adults-only for the first pilot
  • Free for the first gathering
  • Open to every kind of significant loss

Grief Night is not

  • Therapy, medical treatment, or crisis response
  • A religious service, lecture, or performance
  • A place for diagnosing, fixing, or giving advice
  • A promise of healing or transformation
  • Recorded: no photography, audio, or video

04 · Founding now

Help establish the first Syracuse pilot.

No event date has been announced. The current work is to secure a suitable accessible venue, confirm two grounded event-holders, and find Syracuse-area adults who want to be notified.

  • 01An accessible venue for 25–50 adults, indoors or outdoors as conditions allow
  • 02Two grounded event-holders, including a designated safety holder
  • 03People who want notice when the date is set
